091 Trip to seek Zodiac in New Year. ( 3/3 )
東京駅から山形新幹線で約２時間、米沢市に到着しました。
About two hours from Tokyo Station on the Yamagata Shinkansen, I arrived in Yonezawa City.

米沢駅の駅舎です。
This is the Yonezawa Station building.
1993年に建設されたものですが、費用のうち５億円が民間からの寄付で賄われたものだそうです。
It was built in 1993, and 500 million yen of the cost was covered by private donations.

駅前には、クラシックな佇まいの牛料理のお店がありました。
In front of the station was a beef restaurant with a classic appearance.
残念ながらこの日は時間の都合で立ち寄ることができませんでしたが、とても良い雰囲気のお店でした。
Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I was not able to stop by that day, but the restaurant had a very nice atmosphere.

今回の目的地です。
It is my destination this time.
来年の「干支」を求める旅のゴール、長井鉄道の「白兎(しろうさぎ)駅」です。
The goal of the journey in search of next year’s “Zodiac” is Nagai Railway’s “Shiro – Usagi ( = White Rabbit)” station.
( The zodiac sign for 2023 is “Rabbit”. )
待合室の建物外側には、「ウサギの耳」が描かれています。
The “rabbit ears” are painted on the outside of the building in the waiting room.

１両のディーゼルカーが走っていました。
One diesel car was running.

来年の年賀状に利用する写真も、撮影することができました。
I was able to take photos for next year’s New Year’s cards.

白兎駅近くの葉山神社には、狛犬の代わりに２羽のウサギが鎮座しています。
At Hayama Shrine near Shirousagi Station, two rabbits sit in place of komainu (guardian dogs).
14世紀にこの地を訪れた仏教の僧侶に、道案内をしたのが白ウサギ(と白キツネ)だったことから、この地が「白兎」と呼ばれるようになり、この神社にも「狛ウサギ」が祀られているようです。
A white rabbit (and a white fox) guided a Buddhist monk who visited this area in the 14th century, and this place came to be called “Shiro – Usagi ( = White Rabbit)”, and a stone statue of a rabbit is enshrined at this shrine.
このコラムを書きながら気がついたのですが、私が暮らす京都府の宇治も同じような伝説が地名の由来でした。
As I write this column, I realize that Uji in Kyoto Prefecture, where I live, was named after a similar legend.
京都の宇治はかつて「莵道」と表記され、今でもこの表示で「とどう」と読む地名があります。
京都の宇治という地名、個人的には「ウサギ＝莵＝ウ」、「道＝路＝ジ」になったのだと考えています。
こちらは３世紀頃に在位していたとされる応神天皇の皇子が、現在の宇治を訪れ、道に迷った時に神の使いであったウサギに道案内をされたという逸話に由来するとのことです。
It is said that this shrine is derived from an anecdote that a prince of Emperor Ojin, who is said to have reigned around the 3rd century, visited what is now Uji, and when he lost his way, a rabbit, a messenger of Deity, guided him along the way.

確かに、宇治神社では「うさぎみくじ」がありますね。
And at Uji Shrine in Kyoto, there is a ” omikuji ( = a paper fortune) ” that comes in a small pottery shaped like a rabbit.

写真撮影を終えて、米沢駅に戻ってきました。
After the photo shoot, we returned to Yonezawa Station.
東京に向かう山形新幹線の入線です。
The Yamagata Shinkansen bound for Tokyo arrived at Yonezawa Station.

夕方近くになり、ようやくこの日のランチです。
Near evening, it is finally lunch of the day.
米沢市の特産品である、牛肉がたっぷり入ったお弁当。
Bento box lunches filled with beef, a specialty of Yonezawa City
甘味の効いた味付けで、とても美味しかったです。
It was very tasty with a sweet taste.
