217 A short trip to Korea packed with activities ( 6 / 10 )

★

It is the morning of my third day in South Korea.

It was just past 6:00 a.m., and a woman was already out selling lactic acid drinks from an electric cart.

The train crosses the Han River against the backdrop of the morning glow.

It is 6:30 in the morning, and traffic jams have already started on the road along the river.

After traveling for just an hour from Seoul Station, a rural landscape spreads out before my eyes.

Even so, if I keep running for a little while,

Such clusters of high-rise residential buildings appear again and again.

I have arrived at Yeoncheon Station, the northernmost point of Seoul Subway Line 1.

This is the far end of Yeoncheon Station.

Judging by the situation, it appears that roadbed preparation is proceeding further ahead.

I hear there is an observatory in Cheorwon—further along the way—where one can look out toward the north, so I plan to find an opportunity to visit it someday.

Here is the full view of the Yeoncheon Station building.

Korean railway stations are all impressively built.

This is the former station building, preserved on the north side of the current one; it is now used as a tourist information center.

This is the main street extending from the station.

As it was a weekday morning, the atmosphere was quiet and uncrowded.

The Military Demarcation Line also runs through this area of Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do.

There is a military facility nearby, and during my stay of about an hour, I repeatedly heard the sounds of explosions from training exercises.

This particular atmosphere is something rarely found in Japan, and it is one of the reasons I am drawn to this country.

After strolling around the area in front of Yeoncheon Station, we will head back slightly in the direction of Seoul Station.

This is Dongducheon Jungang Station.

This is the city where I will pursue the main objective of this trip: searching for a friend—an international student who was in the same seminar group as me during my university days.

The only clues are the four photos below, taken at the time.

I only remember visiting by taxi—likely from the current Higashi-Zukawa-Chuo Station—the temple where his mother served as head priest; I never recorded the exact location or the name of the temple.

The place we have arrived at is Dongducheon City Hall.

Hoping to find a clue, I showed a staff member a photograph of the temple.

The staff member checked with several departments, but unfortunately, they did not come across any promising leads.

It was suggested that it might be a temple on ‘Soyosan Mountain’ in this vicinity, but it has been confirmed that this is not the case.

I’m making this “journey to find my classmates” my life’s work.

I had lunch at the McDonald’s near Jihaeng Station in Dongducheon.

I had a Big Mac, and it was almost the same as in Japan.

This bun has a bit more of a “bagel-like” quality.

The dressing is exactly the same.

Maybe it’s just my imagination, but the patty had a faint hint of gochujang…

It’s just my imagination, right?

And the thing that gave me the strongest sense of “Korean-ness” in this shop was this poster ⬇️.

It looked like military personnel could get a Big Mac meal at half price.

That’s a wonderful initiative!
