079 Reunion.
この９月、久しぶりに学生時代のゼミの同窓会が開催されました。
This September, for the first time in many years, a reunion of my student seminar class was held.
舞台は、京都市内のとある学校です。
The setting is a certain school in Kyoto.

今は立ち入ることができなくなったチャペルです。
This is a chapel that is now inaccessible.
その頃は、毎朝ここに集うことが義務付けられていました。
At that time, it was mandatory to gather here every morning.
そして讃美歌を歌い、講師の方からの(宗教的な)説教も聞いていました。
Then we sang hymns and listened to the “Sekkyou (= Sermon) also from the pastor.
( “Sekkyou” is Sermon in English. )

そしてこれは、朝が弱かった私は、しばしば「義務」を履行することができず、呼び出しを受けて、「違う意味の説教」頂戴していた思い出の建物。
And this is the building of my memory where I often failed to fulfill my “duties” because I was weak in the mornings, and I was called out and given a “Sekkyou” of a different meaning.
( The word “Sekkyou” here is “scolding” in English. )
いい思い出です、よね？
It’s a good memory, right?

夜中に、視線だか、向いてる方向が変わるとかいう、都市伝説の牛。
The urban legend of the cow that changes its gaze or the direction it faces during the night.
真剣に信じていた人、いますか？
Did anyone seriously believe in it?

私が所属していたゼミですが、教授の強い思いから、一年間だけこの建物の教室で講義が行われていました。
I was a member of this seminar, and the lectures were held in a classroom in this building for one year only, due to the professor’s strong idea.
ただし、この建物はその頃から「重要文化財」に指定されていたため、教授は幾度となく私たち学生に「丁寧に利用するように」と注意を促しておられました。
However, since the building had been designated as an “important cultural property” since that time, the professor repeatedly reminded us students to use the building with care.v
その割に、私たちはかなりリラックスした態度だったので、教授には多くのご心配をかけていたことだと、今になって申し訳なく思っています。
For all that, we were quite relaxed, and I am sorry now that we must have caused a lot of concern to the professor.v
また今日の同窓会は、昨今の状況を勘案され、600名定員の大教室に100名程度が集まり、飲食も懇親会もないものでした。
In addition, today’s reunion, taking into account the current situation, was held in a large classroom with a capacity of 600 people, with about 100 people in attendance and no food, drink, or reception.
さらに、34学年にわたり続いたゼミではありましたが、今日の講話は５つのテーマを時系列に話していただいたので、出席者が皆それぞれに共感を覚える内容のものでした。
Furthermore, although the seminar lasted for 34 grades, today’s lecture was given in chronological order on five themes, so that everyone in attendance could relate to each of the topics.
やはり、私たちの教授は素晴らしい方です。
After all, our professor is a great person.After all, our professor is a great person.
そして、34学年にわたるのゼミ生も素晴らしい人達です。
And the seminar students over the 34 grades are wonderful people.
このつながりは、これからも大切にしてゆきたいと、強く思うことができた一日でした。
It was a day that made me strongly believe that I would like to continue to cherish this connection.v
