210 To Tokyo by Overnight Train (3/4: A Whimsical Bus Trip from Tokyo Station).

夜行列車「サンライズ」で東京駅降り立ちはしましたが、実のところ「次の目的地」は決まってません。
I stepped off the “Sunrise” overnight train at Tokyo Station, but in truth, I haven’t decided on my next destination.

ここのところ、短距離であれば「バス旅」も楽しくなってきたので、ひとまず東京駅八重洲口のバスターミナルへと向かいました。
それぞれの行き先をながめていると、、
Lately, I’ve started to enjoy “bus travel”—at least for short distances—so I headed to the bus terminal at the Yaesu Exit of Tokyo Station.
As I gaze at each of the destinations…
鹿島神宮、河口湖と、行ったことのある場所が並んでいます。
御殿場アウトレットに向かうバスは、すでに満席。
人気がありますね。
そして、京都へ向かうバスもありますが、流石にそれは。。
悩みながら、決めた行き先は「つくば」。
ここなら、つくばエクスプレスで東京に戻ってこれます。
The list includes places I have visited, such as Kashima Shrine and Lake Kawaguchi.
The bus bound for Gotemba Outlets is already full.
It really is popular, after all.
After some deliberation, I decided on Tsukuba City as my destination.
From here, I can get back to Tokyo on the Tsukuba Express.

Alright, let’s set off on this bus!

東京駅を出てしばらくすると、東京スカイツリーが見えてきます。
大阪府南部の泉州地域の方にはわかっていただけるでしょうか。
このタワーのフォルム、上の部分だけですが、あの宗教施設の塔に、なんとなく雰囲気が似ていると思われませんか？
Shortly after leaving Tokyo Station, you will see the Tokyo Skytree.
I wonder if people in the Senshu region of southern Osaka Prefecture would understand.
Don’t you think the form of this tower—or at least its upper section—bears a certain resemblance to the tower of that religious facility?

およそ１時間ほどで、「つくば」エリアに到着。
The bus arrives in the Tsukuba City area in about an hour.
学術研究を目的として、国策によって造られた街ですので、整然と形成されています。
As a city established under national policy for the purpose of academic research, it is laid out in an orderly fashion.

つくば駅のパスターミナルに到着です。
途中で少し渋滞したいましたが、東京駅から70分ほどの所要時間でした。
東京駅から先ほど通った研究施設エリアへ向かうのならば、この高速バスがメインルートになるのでしょうね。
The bus is arriving at the Tsukuba Station terminal.
There was a bit of traffic along the way, but the journey from Tokyo Station took about 70 minutes.
If you are heading from Tokyo Station to the research facility area we just passed, this highway bus is likely the main route.

地下にあるつくばエクスプレスの駅へと進みます。
I head toward the underground Tsukuba Express station.

東京・秋葉原から来た列車の入線です。
The train from Akihabara, Tokyo, is arriving at the platform.

乗車するのは「快速列車」。
The train I am taking is a “Rapid” service.

出発時の乗車促進音楽です。

The boarding encouragement sound played at departure is pleasant.

千葉県柏市を走行中です。
この辺りのエリア、西日本で暮らす私には「東京から遠い」印象がありますが、都心の秋葉原から30分余りですので、このような高層住宅が林立しています。
The train is currently traveling through Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture.
Living in western Japan, I tend to think of this area as being far from Tokyo; however, it is actually just over 30 minutes from Akihabara in the city center, which explains the forest of high-rise residential buildings found here.

途中の駅で列車を乗り換えましたが、つくば駅から１時間たらずで東京・北千住駅に降り立ちました。
探訪の旅は続きます。
I changed trains along the way, but I arrived at Kita-Senju Station in Tokyo in less than an hour from Tsukuba Station.
The journey of exploration continues.
