214 A short trip to Korea packed with activities ( 3 / 10 )

★

I left my luggage at the hotel and came to Busan Station.

As the gateway to one of Korea’s leading cities, it’s bustling with activity, as you’d expect.

So, as planned, I will continue my train-focused journey without doing any sightseeing in the city.

The express train “Mugunghwa” is pulled by an electric locomotive.

This is one of the main dishes of this trip.

Initially, I had planned to use it for my trip to Seoul on the second day.

I thought I had secured my reservation 30 days before it opened, but when I checked again a week ago, I found out that my reservation hadn’t been made.

As a result of hastily rearranging the itinerary, we decided to take a round trip by train between Busan and Dongdaegu on the afternoon of the first day, and to ride the Mugunghwa train on the outbound journey.

This unexpected change in plans caused a bit of a scramble, but it gave us more flexibility in our schedule for the second day, resulting in a more enjoyable trip overall.

I will share more about that in a later blog post.

Now, I’m finally going to board the Mugunghwa train, a dream I once had to give up on.

The step-up entrance also enhances the feeling of being on a journey.

The train that departed from Busan will travel along the Nakdong River for a while.

This truly captures the essence of Korea’s quintessential scenery, and the slow pace of the express train evokes a sense of nostalgia and the joy of travel.

About an hour and a half after departing Busan Station, we enter the city of Daegu.

Behind the rows of agricultural greenhouses, a cluster of high-rise residential buildings came into view.

I got off at Dongdaegu Station.

It was probably a warning sign saying “Do not feed the pigeons!”, but the “residents” seemed oblivious and tried to use the waiting room as if nothing was wrong.

This is the exterior of Dongdaegu Station.

It is the gateway to Daegu Metropolitan City, the fourth most populous city in South Korea, and boasts a dignified appearance on a spacious site.

It can be said to be a symbol of the proud people of Daegu.

There are many Korean restaurants in Japan, but this station’s food court also had a Japanese-style udon noodle shop.

It had an “authentic” name: “Sanuki Noodle Factory.”

“Sanuki” is the old name for Kagawa Prefecture, which is now representative of udon noodles in Japan, and “Sanuki udon” is one of the most famous types of udon noodles in Japan.

It was a different restaurant, but apparently they have something called “fried shrimp udon” there.

In Japan, udon noodles topped with shrimp tempura are popular, but I have never seen udon noodles topped with fried shrimp.

The KTX train returning to Busan has arrived.

On this train as well, you board by stepping up.

Without hesitation, I’ll choose the “Special Class” car.

I can return to Busan in a calm atmosphere.

I’ve returned to Busan Station.

I was taking photos within a permitted area, but it seems I was right on the edge, as I received a loud warning and a public address alert.

I’ll be more careful from now on.

The special resort train that departs Busan in the morning and makes a round trip along the east coast has returned.

On the platform, there was a young boy engrossed in taking pictures of trains, with his mother by his side.

This mother.

The exhaust from the diesel locomotive seemed to be quite unpleasant for them, as they kept shouting “The smell! The smell!” (in Korean, of course), but this time will surely become a wonderful memory for them.

After enjoying myself for a while inside the train station, I finally had dinner.

I’m going to try Japanese food in Korea.

The tonkatsu was served in a “thin and wide” style, and the soba noodles were served in a “Japanese soba noodle soup,” which was another new discovery for me.

This is the night view from the food court at the train station where I had dinner.

If I ever get the chance, I’d like to take a boat trip from Osaka to this port.
