159 A Trip to the Tohoku district (the northeastern area of Japan). [ 5 / 7 ]

旅の途中で降り立った二本松駅。

この街は、母方の祖母の出身地なのです。

旅の当初は予定になかったのですが、仙台駅からローカル列車に乗ったところで、この街の存在を思い出したのです。

I got off at Nihonmatsu Station in Fukushima Prefecture.

This was my first visit to this area, but in fact, this town has a deep connection with me.

1907年(明治40年)に創業の「やなぎや」さんという、お蕎麦屋さん。

残念ながらこの日は休業されていたので、地域のお話をお伺いすることはできませんでした。

祖母が暮らしていた頃、祖母が二本松駅から東京へ上京した時にはすでに営業されていたことになります。

今回の訪問のことは、いつか墓前で報告したいと思います。

A soba noodle shop called “Yanagiya” was established in 907 (40th year of Meiji era).

Unfortunately, it was closed on that day, so we were unable to ask about the local story.

The restaurant was already in business when my grandmother lived there and when she came to Tokyo from Nihonmatsu Station.

I would like to report about this visit at her graveside someday.

街道まで出てみると、和菓子屋さんがありました。

元城下町ということもあり、付近には何軒かのお店がありました。

こちらのお店の方に、「祖母がこの街の出身であり、タバコの葉を栽培する農家だった。」という話をすると、「以前はそのようなタバコ農家が多くあった。」とのことでした。

When I walked out to the street, I found a Japanese sweets shop.

Being a former castle town, there were several stores in the vicinity.

I told the shopkeeper, “My grandmother was from this town, and she was a farmer who grew tobacco leaves.” He said, “There used to be many tobacco farmers like that. I was told that there used to be many such tobacco farmers in the past.

街歩きを終えて駅に戻る頃には、すっかり夕暮れ時になっていました。

By the time I finished my walk through the city and returned to the station, it was completely dusk.
