170 The best brewery ( for me ) in Nara, Japan.
先日、懇意にしていただいている、奈良のクラフトビールブルワリー、ゴールデンラビットビールさんへお伺いしました。
The other day, I visited Golden Rabbit Beer, a craft beer brewery in Nara that I have a friendly relationship with.

まずは、いつものように近鉄京都駅からのスタートです。
First, as always, we start from Kintetsu Kyoto Station.

この日の奈良は、週末にしてもいつもより多くの人出で、浴衣姿の人たちも見受けられました。
On this day in Nara, there were more people than usual, even for a weekend, and some people were seen wearing Yukata ( = “Yukata” is casual clothes for the summer season, such as “KIMONO”. ).
この日は「燈花会(とうかえ)」というイベントが開催されており、猿沢池の周囲はこのような蝋燭の灯火で彩られていました。
On this day, an event called “Toukae” was being held, and the area around Sarusawa Pond was lit up with candle light like this.

普段なら興福寺の五重塔が、⬇️のような姿を現わしているのですが、残念ながらこの日は工事中のため囲いで覆われていました。
Normally, the five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple looks like this ⬇️, but unfortunately on this day it was covered by a fence due to construction work.

近鉄電車の奈良駅から、歩いて10分ほどで、

いつものブルワリーに到着です。
I arrived at our usual brewery.

一杯目は、定番の「そらみつ」をいただきます。

「そらみつ」とは？
「そらみつ」は「大和」にかかる枕詞で「日本書紀」の神武紀に「大空から見て、よい国だと選びさだめた日本の国」と言う意味だと言われております。
原材料はピルスナー発祥の地、チェコ産のザーツホップを100%使用。
モルトの旨味、ホップのさわやかな苦味、ザーツの芳醇な香りを持っています。
For my first drink, I’ll have the classic “Soramitsu.”

What is “Soramitsu”?
“Soramitsu” is a pillow word for “Yamato ( = Ancient Japanese names )” and is said to mean “the country of Japan, seen from the sky and chosen as a good country” in the Jinmu chapter of the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan).
The beer is made with 100% Saaz hops from the Czech Republic, the birthplace of Pilsner.
It has the savory flavor of malt, the refreshing bitterness of hops, and the mellow aroma of Saaz.

そして今回感動したのは、この「黒燿(こくよう)」と名付けられた「ダークラガー」ビールです。
いわゆる「黒ビール」と言われるジャンルは、濃厚な味わいで一般的には「クセ」の強いものが多いと思われます。
ですが、この「黒燿」は、私が今までいただいたビールの中では最も飲みやすいものの一つに挙げられます。
その風合いは「黒豆を煎った」感覚に近く、アルコール度数(4.5%)も炭酸も控えられており、外観とのギャップも楽しめました。
The texture is similar to that of roasted black beans, and the alcohol content (4.5%) and carbonation are both low, making the contrast with the appearance enjoyable.
あくまで私見なのですが、ビールを含め、「お酒」は全般的に「作り手のお人柄」が鮮明に出るものだと考えています。
This is purely my personal opinion, but I believe that alcohol, including beer, in general, clearly reflects the personality of the maker.
先ほどの「そらみつ」をはじめ、ゴールデンラビットビールさんのビールはオーナーさんの柔和で温かいご性格が醸し出されています。
また「黒燿」も女性従業員さんの優しい個性がはっきりと映し出されいると感じました。
「黒ビール」が苦手な方にこそ、お勧めです。
Golden Rabbit Beer’s beers, including the aforementioned “Soramitsu,” exude the owner’s gentle and warm personality. I also felt that “Kuroyo” clearly reflected the gentle personality of the female staff member. I highly recommend this beer, especially for those who don’t like dark beers.

「黒耀」という言葉は、主に「黒曜石」を指す場合と、「黒く輝く」という意味合いで使われる場合があります。黒曜石は火山活動によって生成される黒色の天然ガラス質の岩石で、鋭利な刃物として利用されてきました。また、「黒耀」という言葉は、黒く輝く様子を表す形容詞としても使われます。

The word “Koku-yo” can refer primarily to “obsidian” or to “shining black.” Obsidian is a black, natural, glassy rock formed by volcanic activity and has long been used to make sharp blades. “Osidian” is also used as an adjective to describe a shining black.

そして2025年９月、ゴールデンラビットビールさんは創業10周年を迎えられます。

In September 2025, Golden Rabbit Beer will celebrate its 10th anniversary. A commemorative event will be held, so whether you’re in the area or not, please come to Nara to taste their beer and meet the owner. The venue will be right next to the brewery, just a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station!
