大雪が降るといわれた日曜日、雪景色を求めて京都駅から東へ向かう列車を選びました。

On a Sunday when heavy snowfall was predicted, I chose to take a train heading east from Kyoto Station in search of snowy scenery.

やってきたのは、琵琶湖の東岸を走り日本海に面する敦賀駅に向かう列車です。

The train that arrived runs along the eastern shore of Lake Biwa and heads towards Tsuruga Station, which faces the Sea of Japan.

京都駅を出発し、東山連峰を越えるトンネルに向かい走りだします。

The train departs from Kyoto Station and heads towards the tunnel that crosses the Higashiyama mountain range.

最初の停車駅、山科に到着です。

この駅では、現在は大半の列車が京都駅止まりの関西空港からの特急列車を延長運転されるべく、駅改良工事が行われています。

This train has arrived at its first stop, Yamashina.

At this station, station improvement work is being carried out to allow for the extension of express train services from Kansai Airport, most of which currently stop at Kyoto Station.

途中の石山駅では、赤い電気機関車が牽引するコンテナ用のトレーラー列車が、私の乗る列車を追い越してゆきました。

At Ishiyama Station along the way, a container trailer train pulled by a red electric locomotive overtook the train I was on.

草津駅です。京都駅から約20分ほどで、草津駅に到着です。

左側で先に出発した列車は、この駅から分岐する草津線で三重県北部の柘植駅へ向かいます。

This is Kusatsu Station. It takes about 20 minutes from Kyoto Station to arrive at Kusatsu Station.

The train that departed earlier on the left heads for Tsuge Station in northern Mie Prefecture on the Kusatsu Line, which branches off from this station.

野洲駅です。ここまで来ると、雪も多くなってきました。

This is Yasu Station. By this point, the snow has started to pile up.

It is about 80km from Kyoto Station and takes an hour to reach Maibara Station.

京都駅から約80km、１時間をかけて米原駅に到着です。

本来ですと、この車両が日本海に面する福井県の敦賀駅まで運行される予定でしたが、これからの天候次第では車両運用が困難になるため、車両交換されることとなりました。

右側に、敦賀まで運行される車両が入線してきています。

Originally, this train was scheduled to run to Tsuruga Station in Fukui Prefecture, which faces the Sea of Japan, but depending on the weather from now on, it may become difficult to operate the train, so the train will be replaced.
