115 To Chichibu (Trip by steam locomotive).

東京、上野駅。

Ueno Station, Tokyo.

今回の旅は、ここから始まります。

かつては、東北方面へ多くの列車が出発していた地上ホーム。

The above-ground platform where many trains used to depart for the To-hoku area ( = northeast in Japan).

今は地下の新幹線乗り場が主役となりましたが、堂々とした風格は健在です。

Today, the underground Shinkansen terminal is the main attraction, but it still retains its imposing stature.

この特急列車で上野から出発します。

I will depart from Ueno on this Limited Express train.

朝食は、このお弁当。

Breakfast is this lunch box.

上野駅でも数多くのお弁当が売られていましたが、「幕の内」を選びました。

Numerous bentos were sold at Ueno Station, but I chose the “Makunouchi” boxed lunch.

定番の駅弁ですが、お店によって「ごはんの炊き具合」、「おかずの味付け」に個性があるので、食べ比べの楽しさがあります。

Although it is a standard ekiben, each store has its own unique way of cooking rice and seasoning side dishes, making it fun to compare them.

秩父鉄道の熊谷駅です。

Kumagaya Station on Chichibu Railway.

お目当ての列車が、電気機関車に牽引されて入線してきました。

The train I am looking for has entered the line, pulled by an electric locomotive.

本日の主役です。

Today’s star.

実は僕、子供の頃は蒸気機関車のことは、そんなに好きでもありませんでした。

Actually, I was not that fond of steam locomotives as a child.

どちらかというと、ピカピカの新しい電車が好きだったのですが、大人になるにつれ重厚感のあるSLも好きになっていたのです。

I rather liked the shiny new trains, but as I grew older, I also liked the stately steam locomotives.

秩父鉄道屈指の景勝地、長瀞渓谷です。

Nagatoro Gorge is one of the most scenic spots on the Chichibu Railway.

カヌーをされている方がいますね。

I see some people are canoeing.

SL列車は途中何本かの列車に追い越されながら、ゆっくり、ゆっくりと走ります。

The steam locomotive train runs slowly, slowly, being overtaken by several trains along the way.

秩父駅に到着です。

The train has arrived at Chichibu Station.

ホームでは、未来の車掌さんが確認作業中です。

On the platform, the future conductor is in the process of checking.
